The Challenge
Conversational AI needs more than a model and a chat interface to deliver a consistent experience. The system must preserve relevant context, maintain a coherent personality, handle sensitive conversations appropriately, and support evolving product requirements without becoming difficult to maintain.
My Role & Constraints
I led the product and technical implementation, working across architecture, prompt design, memory, safety logic, integrations, testing, and deployment. The project was developed without a dedicated engineering team, requiring pragmatic technical decisions and an iterative delivery approach.
What I Implemented
01 / Conversational Architecture
Designed a modular conversational system separating personality, context, memory, and response generation. This supports consistent behavior while allowing individual components to evolve independently.
02 / Memory & Context
Implemented structured memory extraction for relevant user context, emotional themes, and unresolved conversational threads, with different retention behavior for free and premium access.
03 / Safety & Dependency Controls
Developed a tiered safety approach separating acute crisis handling from general isolation and loneliness support. Introduced resource routing and conversational guardrails designed to support user autonomy rather than dependency.
04 / Product & Deployment
Integrated the conversational engine into a Next.js web application with Supabase-backed services, access controls, subscription flows, and deployment through Vercel.
Outcome
Delivered a live conversational AI product with integrated memory, safety, and subscription architecture. The system continues to evolve through testing and user feedback.
